This year, United Solo Festival introduces another new collection of scripts published by Indie Theater Now, a digital library of contemporary plays. A newly launched selection of solo plays was compiled after reviewing one hundred theatre productions presented at the Festival this past season. Solo artists from around the globe brought their shows to the world’s largest solo theatre festival at Theatre Row on 42nd Street in New York City. Each production offered a unique story in various performance categories including drama, multimedia, puppetry, stand‑up, and others. The Festival concluded by awarding selected artists for their excellence in solo performance and by recommending several plays for publication on Indie Theater Now.

Selected shows will be presented at Theatre Row this fall, and will have the opportunity to be considered for the next collection published by Indie Theater Now.

They can give a very personal message because… it’s the most honest communication that I know of. So this particularly means a lot to me. And I want to thank all of you and especially the people nominated alongside of me. Hugh Jackman, the great Kathy Griffin, John Hurt, all these great talented people, and this award is for all of us. Thank you.

The festival’s mission is to unite people from around the world, celebrate multicultural diversity, and support the theatrical community. Each season, United Solo collects donations for The Actors Fund.

During its six-week run, the festival sold out thirty-four shows and attracted widespread media interest. Distinguished guests included Oscar nominee John Guare, who opened the festival with his remarks, Golden Globe Award winner and Oscar nominee Marsha Mason, Primetime Emmy and Tony Award winner Cherry Jones, Stella Adler Studio instructors Joanne Edelmann and Alice Saltzman, renowned writer and actor Taylor Negron, and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch members Regina Advento, Pablo Aran Gimeno, Daphnis Kokkinos, and Jorge Puerta Armenta.

The Third Annual United Solo opens tonight at Theatre ROW in the heart of the New York City theatre district on 42nd Street. Through the following 6‑week period, the festival will offer 100 productions ranging from 2 up to 5 different shows per day. This broad assortment of shows targets the multicultural nature of the New York City population. 17 solo shows have been sold out before the opening night of the festival, and other popular shows will run out of tickets fast. 15 productions returning by popular demand, as well as those that received United Solo awards, will be presented in a special Encore category.

Featured solo artists represent 19 U. S. states and 14 countries. 51 one‑woman and 49 one‑man shows fall into numerous categories, ranging from drama, storytelling, puppetry, and multimedia shows to stand‑up, magic, improv, and dance. Recently, United Solo’s diverse collection of shows was introduced in the New York Times selections for The New Season.

All artists compete for various awards, such as: best in acting award, best show, best script, and the audience award. The recipients will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on November 18, 2012 at Theatre ROW. Awarded artists will be extended an invitation to join the United Solo Academy, a group of theatre creators dedicated to the genre of solo performance, including, among other members: Marsha Mason, Austin Pendleton, and Anna Deavere Smith. During the Ceremony, the festival board will be also honoring an outstanding solo performer with a special uAward. This year nominees are: Kathy Griffin, John Hurt, Hugh Jackman, and John Leguizamo.

Tickets are available at the Theatre ROW Box Office (410 West 42nd Street, NYC) and via Telecharge (www.telecharge.com or 212‑239‑6200).
