Foes of a Minimum Wage Guard is the world’s first solo play to tackle the theme of retail crime. Written and performed by Ken Harris, who has firsthand experience in retail security and asset protection, his semi-autobiographical comedy/drama story explores the life of Steve Smelly, an elderly, complacent retail guard at a struggling department store.
Steve, a widower with health issues, is nearing retirement with five years left on his mortgage and little expectation for change. After years of low responsibility, Steve is reassigned as a loss prevention detective due to a critical staff shortage. Tasked with curbing shoplifting, Steve faces the looming threat of termination by the cold-hearted district manager, Mr. Coldstone, if he fails.
As Steve stumbles upon a shocking discovery, he must make a life-altering decision that challenges his loyalty to the store and tests his values. He is forced to confront his self-worth and what he stands for.
Foes of a Minimum Wage Guard is the recipient of the 2024 Springfield Cultural Council Grant Award, the 2024 Chicopee Cultural Council Grant Award, and the 2025 Agawam Cultural Council Grant Award.
