Breathing Lessons is a collaboration between Stephanie Woods and Daniel Stein on the nature of how to rebuild a life after you’ve tried to throw it away. It weaves back-and-forth through time as it lands on addiction and relationships as touchpoint of destruction and reconstruction. This show uses storytelling and object/movement mapping in an attempt to categorize potentially arbitrary things…just in case. Just in case there’s no way to know the difference between the beginning or the end, Breathing Lessons builds a score to either follow or destroy.

At the core of the show is the process of how it was built. Woods holds her theatrical training in the same hand as her recovery as Stein uses his life’s work to remind us that everything is part of it and it is part of everything. Breathing Lessons started as a bi-coastal thesis project between the duo and has grown in research and length since the performance’s origin in Fall of 2021.
