“33” is an endearing bolt of storytelling that offers a hopeful look at the humanity behind the written word. Inspired partly by the life of William Shakespeare, this one person play follows modern-day aspiring author Harry Brook as he loves and writes his way through New York City, only to be stripped of the dream he never knew.
“I’m keenly aware of how my own thoughts, experiences, and emotions are often infused into my writing,” says actor and playwright, John Selby. “So I was curious how the greatest playwright of all time lived in bereavement that may have influenced his work, and how theater can embody ever-changing atmospheres of grief.”
This play had its origins at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and was developed as Selby’s thesis. He hopes it will be, “a tribute to writers past and present whose pens and keyboards (or quills) have seen a teardrop or two.”
