Josephine Baker’s light shines bright in the history of jazz in Paris. Yet many Black women’s contributions remain in the shadows. During 15 years of jazz research in France, Dr. Rashida K. Braggs has studied how race, gender and nationality impacted Black women’s lives there. She created a solo performance to tell their stories. Amber in the City of Light: Act 1 takes scholarship beyond the written page and directly into the hearts and minds of the audience to highlight one such story. The show weaves archival research, field notes and interviews into a multi-sensory experience. Scholarship meets imagination, song joins dance, and multimedia creates the perfect backdrop for one artist’s life as a representation of many.
