Backwards Forwards Back is a tour de force performance by Actor and Veteran L. James which draws on James’ own experience as a soldier as well as research conducted by playwright Jacqueline Goldfinger. A Vet returning from war haunted by what he’s done in the name of our country. At home, he tries to repair his relationship with his sister and build bonds with his niece and nephew. At a county fair his PTSD turns violent. As a result, he’s about to lose his family and any hope for a better future. When his doctor recommends Virtual Reality therapy he hesitates – how can he be a Soldier-Strong and need this kind of help? The desire to rebuild his family overpowers the naysayers in his head. He does the treatment and moves towards healing. “I love playing this role because it is me, and it is the guy next to me, and it is everyone you see marching in a parade on the news. We’re warriors and we’re proud of that… bravery is more than war! Bravery is also coming back home, being open and vulnerable so we can mend the torn pieces of ourselves and move on to being the people we want to be.”
