This one-woman show is a powerful exploration of a Japanese woman’s journey of transformation ,taken place in Heian-Era, Kyoto. Raised to believe that status and power through marriage would bring happiness, she is taught by her mother, a servant in a Samurai household, to become the ideal Samurai’s wife. With determination, she marries a Samurai, achieving the status she was conditioned to desire. However, her dreams soon unravel as she begins to uncover the darkness within her husband and the brutal realities of her new life.
Tragedy strikes when she faces a horrific assault by a bandit, followed by the false accusation of murdering her husband. Amid the pain and betrayal, she is forced to confront the oppressive cultural norms of her time. What begins as a tale of victimhood transforms into a story of profound self-discovery. In the face of societal pressures and personal loss, she rises to find her inner strength and rejects the life she was once taught to live.
This show is deeply personal, drawing from my own reflections on identity, power and the courage to break free from the roles imposed by society. It is a journey of reclaiming one’s voice and choosing a new path toward empowerment.
