Mordantly funny and painfully honest, GRAND ROUNDS opens with a doctor (Caroline Luft) teaching on the topic of “narrative medicine” and explores what happens as her own narrative goes astray. Chris Adrian’s monologue asks, with wit and candor: How do we make sense of illness? Who can help the suffering physician—who heals the healer? What does it mean to “do no harm”?
Giving a narrative to disease, to death, helps us try to make sense of the unfathomable. The GRAND ROUNDS speaker tries urgently to bring the talk back to the topic at hand but can’t help sliding into her personal experience: it’s all one and the same.
In medicine, “grand rounds” are weekly lectures attended by student doctors, in which physicians discuss patient cases, teaching through sharing their practices. Directed by Polly Noonan, GRAND ROUNDS touches on mental illness, on survival, and on the stories we tell ourselves and others about how we live and die in this world.
