A highly sensitive actress, Penelope, desperately wants to influence her six-year-old granddaughter, Viola. Viola must know Pen better than she knew her own granny. Penelope is fed up with the multitudinous obstacles toward authenticity – the pressure to play the dutiful wife, others wanting her job, getting bullied backstage; blocking her want to perform, the only thing she truly loved to do.
When Viola asks, “What do you want to be when you gwow up, Gwammy?”. Penelope scrambles to un-erase her theatrical history that was overshadowed by her husband’s Oscar winning success. She also launches into an investigation of her granny’s life, epigenetics, and matrilineal trauma. The penultimate story is of Pen’s funny, yet heartbreaking, chaotic childhood, which sets her on a life-long quest to beat her brothers at the game of life.
Brilliant wise-crone spirits, including painter Georgia O’Keeffe, a character Penelope played on stage for many years, shows up as a ghost of her theatrical past. Penelope wisely reviews the trials and triumphs of her full life as a wife, mother, and actress, resolving to bring hope to Viola and all next gen creatives.
I arrived by accident on St Patrick’s Day in 1989 and never left. After years of wandering the earth, I finally found a home. These songs are a tribute to my dearest love, New York City!
