Every parent must find a way to battle the monsters under the bed for their children and be the buffer for all of life’s hardships, personal obstacles, and emotional grief that their children may face as they grow.

My mother was that for me and my siblings: a smart, unassuming and doting mother who fought diligently to protect her ‘nest’ single handily. If it were up to her she’d lasso the world to tame it for ‘her babies,’ but life is unpredictable, and the unfair realities of the ‘real world’ came early for our family. By the time I was 13, I already experienced death, was having problems in school, and although I have a loving and supportive family, I often felt a sense of grief and loneliness.

Hummingbird is a nostalgic coming-of-age story about growing up in the Bronx and paying homage to my beloved mother. Tender and sometimes funny, it’s about the importance of memories, unwavering love, and that “where I come from” is more about holding on to the spirit of the woman who taught me how to move through this life confidently, love and create passionately, all while spreading my wings to soar!
