An Otherwise Magical Life, written and performed by Karen Burns, is one Rockette’s whimsical, yet traumatic story of survival, success, brokenness, and how a wicked sense of humor saved her life. Through storytelling, music, and a few pas de bourree’s Karen Burns invites us into her life, from an overly dramatic childhood spent in leg braces to a narrow escape from the Golden State Killer, to life on stage at Radio City Music Hall and back again to leg braces.
A life that could only be defined by pain, isn’t. She danced for 40 years, appeared on The Young and The Restless, trained as a classical pianist which involved a herd of cows, had one date with Joe Namath, and raised two strong daughters with her only husband. Herb Paine says for Broadway World, “To see An Otherwise Magical Life is thus an uplifting encounter with bravery and courage in action.”
Karen’s hope with An Otherwise Magical Life is to offer compassion and a road map for other survivors of sexual abuse and violence, and those battling the super annoying Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be glad it wasn’t you.
