I Came Back For Molly is an autobiographical solo show, exploring themes of mental illness, suicideality, time, and motion. The piece goes back and forth in time between Quarantine/Present, and a period in my life when I was 17-18 years old and spent time in a series of psychiatric hospitals. Have I truly “left” the Loony Bin? Am I a Forever Mental Patient? What does it really mean to “move forward” in life? Should that in fact be the goal? These are some of the questions I’m grappling with. While I alternate between past and present, the past part of the play follows the chronology of my senior year of high school, two suicide attempts, three different mental institutions, and my time working as a barista at Starbucks before beginning my Freshman year of college. It is an attempt to find motion in the places where time has seemingly stopped. I want to find strength in weakness, pride in shame, beauty in the grotesque, and motion within stillness. I want everyone who hears this story to feel less alone.
